Thea+ is free for eligible Alberta students.
Post-secondary students with a documented disability can have their annual Thea+ subscription reimbursed by Alberta Student Aid disability grants. This page walks accessibility advisors through adding Thea+ to a student's Schedule 4.
A study tool that asks the questions, so students actually learn.
Students upload their own class materials, like notes, slides, PDFs, or lecture transcripts, and Thea turns them into personalized, adaptive practice. Instead of handing out answers, Thea asks the best next question for where each student is right now, and gets more challenging as they master the material.
AI is a tool. How it's used matters.
Does the work for the student. Might help a grade today, but they walk into the exam not knowing the material.
Does not write or edit a student's work. It gives them the best next question, so they do the thinking and walk in confident.
How to get a student's Thea+ paid for.
Thea+ goes on the Schedule 4 form (Federal/Provincial Grant for Post-Secondary Students with Disabilities) as assistive software, right alongside the other tools you already recommend.
Meet with the student
As their Accessibility Advisor, talk through the student's goals and supports. They'll need a documented permanent or persistent/prolonged disability.
The student also needs an Alberta Student Aid loan application at studentaid.alberta.ca.
Add Thea+ to Schedule 4
In the Equipment/Assistive Technology section, check Assistive Software, enter Thea+, and add the annual price in Canadian dollars, including GST.
Explain why it's needed
Add a line about Thea+ in the Comments/Disability related rationale box. Use our sample below as a starting point.
Attach the quote
Schedule 4 requires a quote for each item. For Thea+, a screenshot of the Thea+ upgrade screen showing the annual price with tax works. Students applying for a disability grant for the first time also need a Disability Verification Form or Psycho-Educational Assessment.
Submit, subscribe, keep the receipt
The student uploads everything through their Alberta Student Aid account. Once approved, they upgrade to Thea+ and keep the receipt to reconcile the grant.

Sample rationale
Copy it into the Comments box, then tailor it to the student.
Thea+ will allow [STUDENT] to turn their course materials and lecture transcripts into personalized practice questions, flashcards, and practice tests. Due to the nature of their disability, [STUDENT] has difficulty with [attention / processing / recall]. Thea breaks studying into short, active rounds and adapts to what they have not yet mastered, which will support retention and reduce anxiety about forgetting key material during tests. Thea does not write or edit student work.
Deadlines for equipment and assistive technology
- Study periods under 7 months: submit at least 30 calendar days before the study period end date
- Study periods of 7 to 12 months: submit at least 90 calendar days before the study period end date
Good to know
- A new quote is needed each time Thea+ is requested
- Receipts are submitted by the end of the study period, with the student's name and Alberta Student Number (ASN) written on them
- Thea stays free for students who don't need Thea+

It is incredibly useful and honestly the absolute BEST study tool I have ever used in my academic career. As someone who has been diagnosed with ADHD and also struggles with procrastination at times, Thea is the perfect solution and makes studying comprehensive and enjoyable. Quizlet has NOTHING on Thea. All the best and thank you again!Student, In platform feedback
I started using Thea a few days ago and upgraded recently. It helps me immensely when having ADHD and Austism Level 1, which makes studying not that easy in many ways. Thea helps me review the material I went over already and studied to build my confidence in my studies. Every time I had a question wrong, it explained what the correct answer was [...] for my fellow neurodivergent friends, I highly recommend Thea's games, quizzes, and flashcards, and it only takes a minute to generate them. [...] Thank you, Thea Team, for making me confident in my studies as I am on my way to getting my diploma in the career where my passion lies.Student, Google Review
What started as a study tool became something much more meaningful to me. It gave me a way to practice, learn, and prepare at my own pace. Little by little, concepts that once felt intimidating became understandable. Subjects that seemed impossible became manageable. And with every small achievement, I began to rebuild my confidence. [...] Thanks to Thea, I have improved in my classes. I have studied harder. I have learned more effectively. But most importantly, I have started to believe in myself again.Student, email to the Thea Team

Frequently asked questions.
Can Thea+ be paid for by Alberta Student Aid?
Yes. Eligible post-secondary students with a documented permanent or persistent/prolonged disability can include Thea+ as assistive software on their Schedule 4 form. It's funded through the Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment (CSG-DSE) or the Alberta Grant for Students with Disabilities (GFD).
Who fills out the Schedule 4 form?
The student's Accessibility Advisor or school official completes the advisor section, lists Thea+ under Assistive Software, and adds a rationale. The student then uploads the form and documents through their Alberta Student Aid account. If you're a student, ask your school's accessibility office to start the process and share this page with them.
Does Thea count as generative AI writing software?
No. Thea doesn't write or edit student work. It asks students personalized practice questions built from their own course materials, so the student does the thinking.
Is Thea free without Thea+?
Yes. Thea's free plan includes unlimited study kit creation, flashcards, study guides, and games, plus Smart Study and Practice Tests with daily question limits. Thea+ removes those limits, removes wait times, and adds premium features.
What if my student doesn't live in Alberta?
They can still study with Thea for free. You can also ask your local representative to approve Thea+ as a student aid study tool. We've written the email for you.
Not an Alberta resident? Help bring Thea+ to your students.
